Cleaning Optics: If you are unsure about the type of optic you have or the reactivity of your optical substrate or coating, then using De-Ionized Water and a little bit of dish soap is the safest way to make sure the optic is not damaged by harsh chemicals.
Beware of Mold when Storing Lenses
- Do you check the humidity where you store your lens?
- Have you checked your stored lenses for mold?
- Temperature extremes, like moving from air conditioned to hot weather or cold weather to warm indoors, can cause condensation on lenses and in cameras. If you do that often enough, it creates a perfect breeding ground for mold and fungus. Leave the lens and camera in the camera bag so they slowly acclimate to the warmth to reduce condensation.

Lens Filters
You’ll hear different views on whether to use a lens filter or not. Consider the following:
- Never use a cheap $30 filter unless you don’t care about image quality.
- How much does a good quality filter cost vs the cost of replacing the front element or replacing the lens group?
- Always use the lens hood, mounted correctly. Facing out.
